Selecting the correct molybdenum grade for your vacuum furnace hot zone directly impacts component lifespan, dimensional stability, and overall furnace efficiency.
Pure Molybdenum vs. TZM Alloy
Pure molybdenum (99.95%) offers excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, making it the standard choice for heating elements and radiation shields. TZM alloy, with its titanium and zirconium additions, provides significantly improved high-temperature creep resistance — critical for structural components under sustained load.
Operating Temperature Considerations
Pure molybdenum typically performs reliably up to 1800°C, while TZM extends usable range closer to 1900°C with better resistance to recrystallization embrittlement over repeated thermal cycles.
Our Recommendation
For heating elements and radiation shields, pure molybdenum remains the standard. For load-bearing fixtures and hearth components subject to mechanical stress at temperature, TZM is the better investment despite its higher upfront cost.
